Ukrinform(Ukrainian)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - US Congress turns blue, Trump keeps the veto—and Ukraine’s balance sheet in Washington gets both wins and losses
Democrats won control of both chambers of the US Congress in the 3 November midterm elections, NBC News projected , and will take over when the new Congress meets in January. The result ends Trump's Republican majority but leaves him the veto. For Ukraine, voters removed some of Kyiv's critics and several of its staunchest Republican allies. Hours before Americans voted, Russia fired 59 cruise missiles at Ukraine's power grid. For two years, a Republican Congress left Ukraine policy largely to the White House, which struck a diesel deal with Moscow that senators of both parties said clashes with a 2022 jaban. Congress writes the budget and sanctions laws and can investigate the administration. That puts real levers over US help for Ukraine back in lawmakers' hands. Texas and Kansas elect Democratic senators for the first time in decades As of publication, Democrats hold 54 Senate seats to the Republicans' 43, with races in Alaska, Mississippi, and Nebraska still uncalled. They flipped seven, including Texas and Kansas. Kansas last sent a Democrat to the Senate in 1932, Le Monde noted . In the House, NBC News has called 231 races for Democrats and 144 for Republicans, and expects ab
Euromaidan Press(Ukrainian)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - Polish president storms into besieged court amid constitutional crisis (VIDEOS): As it happened
The power struggle between the country’s Euroskeptic president and pro-EU government escalated as riot police surrounded the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw The longstanding power struggle between Poland’s right-wing, Euroskeptic president and its pro-EU government over control of the country’s top court escalated dramatically on Friday night as riot police surrounded the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw. The latest stand-off was triggered by Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, a judge backed by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government, who ordered the suspension of the Constitutional Tribunal’s president, Bogdan Swieczkowski, and vice president, Bartlomiej Sochanski. Police were deployed as an announcement of their suspensions appeared on the court’s website, from which their profiles were reportedly removed. Shortly afterward, the tribunal’s official X account claimed that its website had been subjected to an “unlawful takeover” and insisted that both officials remained in their posts. “All persons participating in these actions are committing the crime of a coup d’état,” the account stated. However, the institute found that only €41.7 billion qualified as actual bilateral aid, while €35.9 billion was spent in Germany and another €22 billion consisted of future military commitments. ”The €100 billion figure is misleading and wrongly labeled as ‘bilateral aid to Ukraine’,” said Christoph Trebesch, head of the institute’s Ukraine Support Tracker. Ukrinform (UA)(Ukrainian)ukMistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - Attacks on Ukrainians in Poland growing – envoy
Hate crimes have risen by around 30%, Kiev’s ambassador to Warsaw has said Attacks on Ukrainians in Poland have continued to rise as public attitudes toward Ukrainian refugees deteriorate, Kiev’s ambassador to Warsaw, Vasily Bondar, has said. His remarks came a day after a Ukrainian man was detained over a deadly knife attack at a Catholic abbey in southeastern Poland. Polish police recorded 180 attacks or acts of aggression against Ukrainians in the first half of 2026, Bondar told RBK Ukraine in an interview published on Friday. There were 275 such incidents in all of 2025, up from 267 in 2024. “We do see an increase of around 30%,” the diplomat said. He added that more incidents are now being classified as hate crimes against Ukrainians rather than ordinary domestic offenses. Bondar also said Ukrainians committed 10,800 offenses in Poland during the first half of 2026, but argued the figure was statistically insignificant given that around 2 million Ukrainian nationals live in the country. His comments came a day after a 31-year-old Ukrainian man allegedly stabbed five people at a Benedictine abbey in Jaroslaw, killing a priest and injuring four others. Polish a

Ukrinform (UA)(Ukrainian)ukMistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - Poland kept selling itself as Kyiv’s gateway to Europe—Ukraine stopped needing one, Polish journalist argues
Poland's governing coalition under Prime Minister Donald Tusk misread how far Kyiv's ambitions had grown and kept presenting Warsaw as Kyiv's indispensable guide to Europe, Polish journalist Mateusz Mazzini argued in The Guardian on 26 August 2026. It also never readied Polish society to treat refugees as its equals, and it encouraged the belief that Warsaw could decide whether Ukraine gets into the EU, he wrote. The two countries built their partnership during Russia's full-scale invasion, with Poland becoming Ukraine's main supply route for Western weapons, a leading provider of military and humanitarian aid, and a leading advocate for Kyiv's bid to join the European Union. That relationship has since frayed over refugee policy, historical disputes, and attitudes toward Ukrainians. A July poll by CBOS, Poland's biggest pollster, found that 52% of Poles opposed accepting Ukrainian refugees, compared with 42% who supported it, the first such reversal since the survey began in 2015. TASS(Russian state)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - Denmark to further tighten rules affecting Ukrainian refugees
Some municipalities in the country are under “severe pressure” due to a large number of asylum seekers, the immigration minister has said Denmark plans to stop issuing temporary residence permits to Ukrainian refugees from regions least affected by the conflict with Russia, the EU nation’s immigration minister, Morten Bodskov, has said. The announcement follows a wider trend among European nations to cut benefits to those fleeing the conflict with Russia and strip protections for military-aged males from Ukraine. In June, the government in Copenhagen presented a bill aimed at preventing military-aged men from Ukraine, who do not have an official exemption from service, from receiving asylum. In a statement on Saturday, Bodskov said that Denmark wants to further tighten the rules for those who escaped the fighting, despite prolonging the Ukraine Special Act that allows them to stay in the country until March 2028. Denmark has accepted 47,600 displaced Ukrainians since the escalation between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022, according to the minister’s data. Euromaidan Press(Ukrainian)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - Not burden: Ukrainian refugees in Moldova opened 200 businesses and paid $90 million in taxes since 2022
Ukrainian refugees in Moldova have paid approximately $90 million in taxes and social contributions, and opened more than 200 businesses since the start of Russia's full-scale war in 2022 , Moldovan business outlet Mold-Street reported , citing data from the Economic Council under Moldova's prime minister. The findings invert the standard "refugees as burden" framing in a country where Ukrainian arrivals have, in practice, become part of the tax base and a source of new business activity. More than 47,000 Ukrainian refugees have extended their temporary protection status in Moldova since the start of 2026, with another 4,700 submitting new applications. The pattern mirrors Poland on a smaller scale, where 1.55 million Ukrainian citizens contributed approximately $5 billion to the Polish budget in 2024. Integration barriers remain despite legal labor-market access Moldovan law gives Ukrainian refugees access to the labor market, but integration remains complex due to language barriers, difficulty in recognizing professional qualifications, and the need to adapt to local market requirements. Euromaidan Press(Ukrainian)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - Poland arrests 11 over Russia-funded paid protests among Ukrainian refugees
Poland arrested nine Ukrainian and two Belarusian nationals on charges of organizing paid demonstrations among Ukrainian refugees using Russian funds, Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak announced on 29 June. The arrests mark a documented case of Russian-backed influence operations targeting Ukraine's refugee diaspora in a NATO member state—using Ukrainian citizens as instruments against their own country's interests. What happened The suspects recruited participants and paid them to attend "demonstrations" among Ukrainians in Poland beginning in autumn 2025, Siemoniak said. "According to the Internal Security Agency, the funds for this purpose came from Russia. This is classified as an attempt at an influence operation targeting Ukrainian migrants in Poland," he stated. All 11 will be deported, Siemoniak added. How the scheme operated The organizers exploited politically charged topics—including news about corruption scandals in Ukraine—to inflame emotions and provoke protests among Ukrainian refugees, Polish law enforcement reported. Their stated aim was to manipulate the mood of the refugee community and use p

Ukrainska Pravda(Ukrainian)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - EU to refuse protection for military-age Ukrainians
The bloc has said it will keep supporting refugees from the country, while also taking Kiev’s defense needs into account The European Commission has proposed excluding military-age Ukrainian men from temporary refugee protections granted by the EU, while maintaining the scheme for others who fled the conflict with Russia for another year. Kiev announced a general mobilization shortly after the escalation of the conflict in February 2022, barring almost all men considered eligible for service from leaving Ukraine. However, many of them still managed to escape the country; adult males currently account for around 27% of all Ukrainians benefiting from EU protections, with the rest being women and minors, according to the bloc’s data. In a statement on Friday, the European Commission said that it is asking member states to back the prolongation of the scheme, providing Ukrainian refugees with residence permits, the right to work and access to medical assistance, social welfare and education, until March 2028. The EU executive body stressed that by making the proposal it “reinforces its unwavering commitment to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.” Read more Ukrain

Source: European Pravda correspondent in Brussels, citing the European Commission's press service Details: The substance of the proposal on extending temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU will be announced by European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner at 10:30 Kyiv time. According to European Pravda, temporary protection will be extended for a further year – until 4 March 2028. The European Commission has not yet clarified whether amendments will be made to the Temporary Protection Directive, in particular whether the EU will propose denying shelter to those who left Ukraine in breach of the law – for example, men of conscription age. It should be noted that the next step will be discussion and approval of the European Commission's proposal by the Council of the EU. Ukrainska Pravda(Ukrainian)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - Poland and Ukraine’s memory war has spilled into the streets. Its consequences might be disastrous.
The Polish-Ukrainian memory war is no longer in the past. In 2026, it has spilled into the streets of Poland and its chambers of power. Four years ago, Poland and Ukraine’s relationship looked nothing like this. In February 2022, Poles met Ukrainian refugees at the border with food, beds, and other vital supplies; within months, Poland had taken in 1.6 million refugees, provided 318 tanks to Kyiv, and supplied Western military aid to Ukraine’s defense. In a March 2022 poll, 94% of Poles backed taking in Ukrainian refugees; by early 2026, the figure had fallen to 48 %, with 46% opposed. The opinion reversal has turned violent. On a Warsaw bridge in May 2026, a 16-year-old Ukrainian refugee named Artem had his skull fractured . He had fled Russian missiles in Zaporizhzhia, only to be assaulted abroad. Weeks later, Lublin 's city hall took the Ukrainian flag down . In Kielce, a Law and Justice (PiS)-dominated council cancelled a bus donation to its Ukrainian sister city over a street named after Ukrainian nationalist Stepan Bandera. Pro-Ukrainian Polish activists raised the funds anyway. These incidents come as re
Euromaidan Press(Ukrainian)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - German party leader wants Ukrainians removed from welfare scheme
Markus Soeder also called for deportations to be boosted and the promotion of voluntary departures as part of a cost-cutting plan Unemployed Ukrainians should be stripped of access to Germany’s unemployment and welfare benefits system, the leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Soeder, has said. He added that deportations and voluntary departures should be stepped up as part of a cost-cutting scheme. Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, Germany has been the main destination for Ukrainian refugees in the EU, ahead of neighboring Poland. Of the 1.3 million people it has taken in over the past four years, only 341,000 were employed as of June 2025, according to government figures. The authorities in Germany have increasingly warned that the cost of supporting refugees is straining public finances. In an interview with Bild published on Saturday, Soeder called for a reduction of payments under Buergergeld, Germany’s primary tax-funded welfare and long-term unemployment scheme, in an effort to secure funding. “The legal framework must now be changed so that Ukrainians are no longer financed through the Burgergeld system,” he
RT(Russian state)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - Von der Leyen reported to be urging EU countries to rethink conditions for accepting Ukrainian refugees
In a letter sent to EU leaders ahead of a European Council meeting, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reportedly urged governments to introduce restrictions on accepting Ukrainian refugees. Source: Der Spiegel , dpa and AFP, which have seen the letter, as reported by European Pravda Details: The letter states that the European Commission will propose extending the duration of temporary protection for Ukrainians, but the scope of this protection should be limited so that it does not undermine Ukraine's capacity to defend itself. Although the letter does not specify concrete measures, this can be interpreted as a suggestion that the intake of military-age men should be restricted, as has been repeatedly reported by Western media. Background: According to Euractiv , the EU is discussing the possibility of excluding Ukrainian men of conscription age from the expanded temporary protection scheme introduced in response to Russia's full-scale invasion. Any such restriction would apply to new applicants seeking temporary protection. The European Union plans to make a decision on the status of Ukrainian refugees in July 2026, or if that is not possible , in September. T
Ukrainska Pravda(Ukrainian)Mistreatment of Ukrainian refugees - “Poland and Ukraine need each other more than their leaders admit”— a Polish advocate for Ukraine on why the memory feud helps Moscow
On 26 May, Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree honoring a special forces unit as "Heroes of the UPA" — the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which fought both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in WWII. In Ukraine, the UPA is often seen as an anti-Soviet resistance movement. In Poland, it is remembered for the 1943-1945 Volhynia massacres, in which the UPA killed up to 100,000 ethnic Poles . Within two weeks, the decree handed Poland's nationalist right a lever it had sought for years. The timing could hardly be worse. Poland is the land corridor for Western weapons, the host of some 1.5 million Ukrainian refugees , and one of the votes Kyiv needs to enter the EU. The quarrel over the decree now strains all three at once: weapons to Kyiv, Ukrainian refugees in Poland, and Ukraine's EU ambitions. The damage is already visible where you would least expect it. Polish and Ukrainian forensic teams exhuming the Volhynia dead now keep cameras away from the graves, fearing images of the remains will be fed into Russian propaganda or AI deepfakes.
